I've heard about this solution before, but I've never seen it in action. A simple, yet very effective way to clean oil out of water is use hay to absorb it.
I wish the suits at BP would hear about this idea, if they don't know about it already, and at least consider to use it. It would probably save them a lot of money and preserve the environment in the long run.

The farmer demonstrated the business in Florida to FEMA, with some folks from the Coast Guard present. Hay has been purchased. Now the idea has slipped from the news - and the blog it first appeared on.
At one point, they were seeking donations of "non-filthy" pet and human hair to make hair mats to absorb the oil. I'm sure they heard about the hay, then, too. Lord knows why they haven't tested it, though, or announced the results of trials.
